A talk by Fr Brendan Byrne SJ

Fr Brendan Byrne, SJ (ordained 1970), taught New Testament for over three decades at
Jesuit Theological College, Parkville, within the (ecumenical) United Faculty of Theology.
A former member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (1990-96), he has published
over twenty books, both technical and popular, on all four Gospels, on the Letters of
Paul, and on Ignatian spirituality. His most recent publication is Words of Faith: A
Vocabulary of Paul the Apostle (Paulist, 2023). Light to the Nations: A Reading of the
Acts of the Apostles will appear shortly. Now Professor Emeritus of the University of
Divinity (Melbourne), he continues to write and gives workshops and retreats to clergy
and parish communities around Australia.

The Risk of Freedom: From Genesis to Paul and Ignatius
The talk will focus on the concept of Freedom, as a prerequisite for human beings to
have a love relationship with God. It will begin with the creation story in Genesis 2-3 and
the refinement of this in St Paul and, finally, against this biblical background, explore the
Ignatian understanding of freedom in the service of mission.
